“There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new age technology, but if teachers themselves are not able to bring it into the classroom and make it work, then it fails.” - Nancy Kassebaum

The Learning Network

Today I discovered a new (to me) website that is like a treasure chest of online activities. The New York Times website has an incredible education section. The Learning Network provides teaching and learning materials and ideas all based on New York Times content. How's that for staying current on events of our world?

The fact that teachers can find top-notch lesson plans would be enough to make this site a "must" for the twenty-first century teacher; however, the authors take it a BIG step further by adding opinion questions, new quizzes, word of the day, and more. Students are able to respond to these online elements and instantly see what other students their age around the world think about the subject.

Here is a sample from the student opinion section. One hundred twenty-eight students responded to this question.
This is a sample from their student challenge.

. On behalf of teachers everywhere, Thank you New York Times! What an extraordinary resource!
