ABCya! Word Clouds

Unless you have been living under a rock, I am sure you have heard of Wordle. Wordle introduced us all to word clouds. Word clouds are a fun way to
attractively arrange words, where the most important words are bigger than the others. Word clouds are popping up all over. Just the other day, I saw a billboard on the highway that was a word cloud.

While I love wordle there is one problem with it. There is no way to save. It is really frustrating for students who are used to being able to push "save".

ABCya! to the Rescue! "ABCya! is the leader in free educational kids computer games and activities for elementary students to learn on the web." * ABCya! Word Clouds offers us an easy word cloud generator with the ability to save as a jpeg. Fonts, colors and layouts can be customized, or you can go wild with a random choice of all three!

I know we all have great ways we are using word clouds in our classrooms. Please comment and tell us how you are using them.

I will go first. I make a word cloud out of the inaugural addresses of three famous presidents. The students then look at the word clouds and try to decide which word cloud goes with which president.

Bonus: Have you seen "Guess The Wordle"? This blog, hosted by Jennifer Wagner offers our students a daily Wordle puzzle. What a great way to start a class or how about those dreaded last five minutes when you are finished a bit earlier then planned. Thank you Jennifer for your service. We all appreciate what you are doing for us.
